JUST IN: Pete Hegseth Betrayed By Two GOP Senators

The nomination of Pete Hegseth for the position of Secretary of Defense has encountered a significant obstacle following the announcement of opposition from two Republican senators, Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Their dissent has placed Hegseth’s nomination in a precarious situation, compelling the GOP to seek additional votes in a narrowly divided Senate.

Hegseth’s nomination to lead the Defense Department successfully passed a crucial procedural vote in the Senate on Thursday, bringing it closer to a final resolution. Renowned for his military background and strong advocacy for veterans, Hegseth has faced pushback from certain members of his own party.

The Senate voted 51-49 to invoke cloture, which permits up to 30 hours of debate prior to the final vote, indicating an impending high-stakes confrontation. Senator Murkowski, in an extensive statement shared on social media, expressed her decision not to support Trump’s nominee.

With a Senate composition of 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats, Hegseth can afford to lose up to three Republican votes, provided all Democrats oppose his nomination. Murkowski acknowledged Hegseth’s contributions to veterans but raised concerns regarding his qualifications to manage such a large institution. “Overseeing the Department of Defense necessitates extensive experience and expertise,” she stated on X. “Mr. Hegseth’s previous roles do not convince me that he is equipped for such a significant responsibility.”

“The leader of the Department of Defense must exemplify the standards of conduct and character we expect from all servicemembers, and I have substantial concerns regarding Mr. Hegseth’s nomination that I cannot disregard.” Murkowski concluded, “In light of the current global security landscape, it is essential to confirm a Secretary of Defense; however, I regret that I cannot support Mr. Hegseth.”

Senator Collins further complicated the situation for the GOP by voting against cloture, effectively hindering the confirmation process. “After thorough consideration, I have made the decision to oppose Pete Hegseth’s nomination.”
